De buizen bevatten natriumcitraat oplossingen in concentraties van 3,2% of 3,8% en worden gebruikt voor assays in de haematologie. Het mengen van 9 delen bloed met 1 deel natriumcitraat vindt direct na de bloedafname plaats, door het omschudden van de buis, dat antistolling veroorzaakt middels de binding met calcium.
